When selecting the pattern, the overall shape of the paved area should be taken into consideration. Random patterns tend to better suit irregular-shaped paved areas, whereas strructured regular -patterns look better over rectangular areas. The size of the area also affects how well the pattern suits. A smaller pattern over a large area can make the surface look too busy. On the other hand, a large pattern can often fit badly into a small space, leaving a large number of incomplete shapes.

Make sure you take into connsideration the effect you are trying to achieve and the colours you have already used (or will use) on the exterior of the house. A general rule is to use not more than 3 colours. Strong darker colours often stand out and provide a dramatic effect while paler colours can also provide a strong contrast, depending on your colour scheme. Crown has a number of sample boards that can be used to match with other materials. You can also use a coloured grouting to match and have a contrasting colour for the pattern to produce a more subtle colour scheme.

When selecting a particular finish, consider the area's location and prospective use. For areas that are exposed to rain or pool water, a textured or trowel finish is recommended, as this increases the slip resistance. Flood finishes are better suited to internal areas where a smoother surface is required. They're also easier to sweep and clean.

A border can help define the edge of your paved area and is often useful for making a design look more formal, especially when a contrasting colour is used. However, if your paved area is small or narrow, the use of a border could make the area look smaller than it actullay is, giving it a closed in feeling.
